Unusual Suspects Rioja wine tour: under-the-radar cellars
A tour to taste top-notch Rioja wines with very little market exposure (only sold in Rioja or Spain)
Hidden gems of Rioja
The Unusual Suspects is a tour to explore the hidden gems of Rioja. These true under-the-radar cellars are led by small producers who make small batches of high-quality wines.
Under the-radar-cellars
They are under-the-radar cellars because despite the low profile they keep and the little market exposure they have, quality speaks for itself and that’s why the wines are directly sold to high-end restaurants only within Spain or Europe.
For us it means a lot that the producers we picked are highly praised by their fellow Riojan winemakers (there are almost 600 wineries in the region!). You’ve come all the way here and we think it makes sense that you can sample the wines that are not so likely to be found at home, what we call the hidden gems.
Number of wines tasted: 11 (at least!)

John Kassab2024-06-01Great tour and great wine! Highly recommend!Hadley Leonard2024-06-01I wish I could give more than 5 stars. We have done wine tastings all over the world and this was hands down the best experience. Inma is so knowledgeable about wine and the history of the area. You will learn so much, drink great wine, and have fun along the way. You will not be disappointed about booking a wine tour here.Nancy Woodruff2024-05-03This was one of the BEST days ever! Mel took us to some fabulous wineries! Spending the day with him was one of the highlights of our trip. He shared so much about the region, wineries, and took us to some incredible places we would have never seen on our own. The lunch he served us as well as great conversations meant so much to us! We would definitely encourage anyone to book with them. We hope to do it again someday with him.Tom2024-04-02My wife Catherine and I did the unusual suspects tour on Easter Monday 1st April (a birthday present for her). We did the tour with Mel, who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about wine. He is very good at explaining the interesting intricacies of all things vino and his knowledge is superb. Above all he was a genuinely lovely bloke and it was a sincere pleasure to spend the day with him. We went to three amazing wineries and tried some truly unique high quality wines. It was Easter and two of the three wineries opened especially for our tour which is a testament to the great relationship Mel and Imna have with these talented wine producers. The wineries themselves were nothing short of amazing and my wife and I had an amazing day that we will look back on with the fondest of memories.Doug Newman2024-02-29My wife and I had a great trip with Mel this week. It’s offseason and we contacted Inma late. They were able to accommodate us with a custom tour to three delightful wineries including two that we would not have been able to access without them. Mel was very pleasant company and we learned a lot about Rioja - The people, terroir, wine, and history. Got a real sense of place. We’re taking home some age worthy wines that will help us remember the day for years to come. Would highly recommend!Todd Skobinsky2023-11-29My wife Heather and I are wine lovers and when we travel we like to seek out wine experiences. Inma from Rioja Wine Trips was amazing! Inma picked us up at our hotel and arranged for two-days’ worth of touring and tasting and we were so happy with our unique experience. We spent one on one time with wine makers learning their wine making techniques and traditions! We ended up buying so much wine because it was all fantastic and bottles that you just cannot find in the U.S. Inma took us to an amazing lunch/restaurant on day one and prepared a beautiful picnic lunch for us in day two. Charming towns, caves/tunnels, beautiful scenery and amazing wine! We highly recommend Inma and Rioja Wine Trips!Ben Griffiths2023-10-26Just back from Inma’s fabulous Unusual Suspects tour and what a fabulous day out it was. I was hoping for a personalized look in on a couple of worthy boutique Rioja producers and that was precisely what we got. Informative and fun, terrific wines poured up and a likely high point of our 14 days traveling through Spain. The Cupani Winery was truly next level!
The true lesser-known face of Rioja wines
We feel that very often the expresions off-the-beaten-track and hidden gems are overused in the Rioja wine tourism context and have sadly become a catchphrase, rather than being an honest reflection of the hard work of these growers.
Our goal is to offer a win-win experience for both sides. You can live first hand the wonderful hand-crafted wines on this intimate tour that unveils the lesser-known face of Rioja wines, whereas they get some market exposure and feedback. Sometimes you just come across extremely gifted people throughout your career. We have been blessed to meet them and feel grateful to introduce them to genuine wine lovers and wine enthusiasts like you.
You will visit to 3 under-the-radar cellars and enjoy a private guided tour at one of them, along with 3 tastings.
These are usually “one-man band” characters, very talented grapegrowers and winemakers that make top-notch wines with little marketing resources. The facilities are not state of the art because they focus on the vineyards. Once you see their hands and the passion they put into it you’ll understand why it’s a true off-the-beaten-track experience.
